Navigating Power Dynamics with Compassion

I often use this space to share NVC tips to empower positive change in self and relationships. This time I want to acknowledge the limits of individual effort, especially within systems like workplaces. You can have all the skills in the world but there is still a limit to what you can do individually.  Culture and communication is a co-creative act: we are bringing all of our ideas, awareness, creativity or lack thereof to our conversations to make long-term change. We are shaped by the culture we operate in. Lasting change requires addressing the broader context. For example, you can have done all of the inner work you could do but if you work in a place where people think compassion is weakness and that vulnerability is undesirable, it’s going to be hard to create the conditions for honesty and open dialogue.

This is why I’m passionate about my organizational consulting work. It’s one thing to navigate conflict on your own, but it’s much more effective when everyone practices these skills as part of the organizational culture. In that case, you’re not creating and advocating for a standard; you’re upholding one.

When I work with organizations, I offer training, one-on-one coaching, mediations and facilitated conversations- methods that work together to foster real change. If someone’s really struggling with some aspect of the workplace and is experiencing communication challenges or if there’s a conflict between two people that has gotten divisive, a general training on conflict resolution isn’t going to be enough. One-on-one coaching and mediation can help untangle that dynamic to the point where individuals are open to the skills and learnings offered in a workshop.

This is why it’s so important to get help when tackling systemic issues like oppression. It can feel overwhelming to address these deeply ingrained dynamics on your own. That’s why reaching out to the community and building alliances with others who are committed to creating a better world is crucial. No one can do it all alone, and true progress requires collective effort and support.

Here’s a case story of an organization I’ve worked with and the changes we achieved. There is a video testimonial about the work that we’ve done together: CoLab Coop — LIFT Economy

If you’re ready to take that step or want to explore how your organization can engage in these vital conversations, I’d love to support you. Sign up for a free consulting meeting, and let’s work on creating the cultural shifts you envision. https://calendly.com/phoenixsoleil/30min
