From Tension to Connection: The Power of Small Moves

When you step into a conversation full of tension, remember this: every movement they make towards you matters. Every attempt, every fragment of acknowledgment— Notice it. Appreciate it.

In my last newsletter, I spoke about noticing warmth—any sign of warming or opening up in the other person during a challenging conversation. Let’s explore that more deeply, because its importance cannot be overstated.

Recently, I was in a conversation with someone overwhelmed by hurt and anger. And I told them: Thank you for continuing this conversation even though it’s hard right now.

Their anger remained—it ebbed and surged like waves against a rocky shore—but something softened, too. At one point, they said, I was glad that you reached out. Before my Nonviolent Communication (NVC) training, I might have felt a quiet relief but kept it to myself. Instead I said, It was good to hear you say that.

These micro-moves change the energy in the room— tiny sparks, small shifts that add up. Think about it: doesn’t it feel good when you realize your words are landing, that what you’re saying matters to someone else? Imagine how many conversations feel like shouting into the wind, where no matter what you say, judgment awaits.

Now, imagine someone telling you, What you just said made a difference to me.
Next time you’re in a challenging conversation with your colleague, your boss, your partner or your teen, ask yourself: Is there anything I sincerely appreciate about the other person right now? Is there anything they’re doing or saying that helps me feel more present, more cared for? Because we don’t want you to pretend. Your sincerity is the magic that makes your words land deeply and authentically.

And don’t expect the conversation to unfold neatly. Sometimes, softening brings a fresh wave of anger, grief or something else—fiercer and hotter than before. That paradox exists because softening creates safety. Safety to express the intensity that’s been suffocating inside. Intimacy can feel like fire before it feels like warmth.

There will be moments when applying this guidance feels impossible. You might find you don’t have it in you—and that’s okay. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up with presence when you can.

This is not a formula where one action guarantees success. Some people can’t let warmth in because history has made it too dangerous for them. And sometimes, even when all you offer is care, they can’t meet you there.

But when they can—and when you can—it can be breathtaking.
