Group Description

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
— Rumi

This is a group that I’ve been facilitating since the end of 2007, although it already existed for a year or two before that. There are still current members who have been in the group longer than I have. The group meets almost every Monday of the year, whether I can make it there to facilitate or not. I make the journey from San Francisco to Walnut Creek every couple of weeks, schedule permitting, because I so enjoy the group and can think of few better ways to start my working week. I’ve been repeatedly wowed by the way the regular members of this group have shown up with empathy for each other, and for occasional visitors who drop-in, perhaps for only one group, with a really pressing need for emotional support. I’ve also been wowed by the way that this empathy, and getting connection to each other’s underlying needs, has resulted in truly practical offers of and requests for support.

Back in 2011 Edwin Rutsch, Founder of Center for Building a Culture of Empathycame to the group and made the following video. Hopefully this videos captures some of the fun, community and connection that happens in the group.

The group is “request-driven” so I rarely arrive with a specific topic to share, although sometimes there is a request for me to teach on a particular topic. Group empathy happens a lot, providing that rich and relieving experience of “being heard” deeply, plus the connectedness to fundamental needs that allows participants to see more clearly what they want to do next in any given situation they’re facing.

There are other requests – for example we will sometimes do pair exercises or group exercises on self-connection and self-expression – and practice communicating with those who are acting or speaking in ways we find more painful or frightening.

Some participants bring lunch and eat together at Unity after the group completes, there’s even a kitchen if you want to heat something up.

I hope to see you there! ~ Newt Bailey

Who’s it for?

The group is open to anyone who wishes to learn or deepen their capacity to use NVC in their lives. No previous experience is required.

About Newt Bailey
Newt’s passion is to help people connect, to experience greater intimacy, and to find the potential for mutually satisfying change that lies within conflict. He is also convinced that personal growth and change in consciousness is essential if we’re to bring about the changes we want to see in our communities and our world.

Since he started studying NVC in 2005 Newt has set out to understand and share with others the essential core of NVC. He believes strongly in teaching the principles of NVC in a way that frees students from specialized language, and allows facility with connected communication to grow in small, quickly assimilated steps. Newt teaches the NVC practices, skills and awareness he uses in his own life.

Since 2006 Newt has been facilitating NVC groups, leading workshops and retreats, and developing his unique approach in public and organizational settings. Newt also attributes great steps in his personal understanding of NVC to working with prisoners and parolees. He has taught NVC, NVC mediation and NVC coaching across the USA and in Europe.
